The microwave has become a staple in most people’s homes. People use their microwaves for just about everything, from reheating to cooking. Now people have gotten to a point where they’re thawing food in their microwaves too. They just take food out of the freezer and thaw it in the microwave. Sometimes people do this because they’ve forgotten to let their food thaw naturally overnight in the refrigerator. So, when they realize their food is still in the freezer, they rush to unfreeze it.
Is thawing food with a microwave an acceptable thing to do? If you were to ask microwave manufacturers, they’d tell you it is acceptable. That must be why so many new microwaves have a defrost option built into them. This allows you to just put your frozen food in the microwave and push one button to thaw it out. The only problem is that the cooking temperature tends to be too low on defrost. You’ll have to keep defrosting for 5 to 10 minutes before you get the food soft enough to your liking.
On the other hand, if you were to put frozen food in the microwave on maximum power, then you run the risk of cooking the food as opposed to just thawing it. Depending on what kind of food you’re trying to thaw, the outcome may be less than appealing to your taste buds. Microwave cooking can never replace stove, oven or frying pan cooking when it comes to taste satisfaction.
For instance, many people like to thaw frozen beef and hamburger meat in the microwave. However, they usually end up heating it so much that the meat turns grey. Thawed meat should not change color in the microwave. If it does, then you have cooked it. Do not try to eat meat that was cooked in the microwave because everything from the texture to the taste will be unsatisfying and dull.
What do you do then? Well, as previously hinted, the best way to thaw your food is to leave it overnight in the refrigerator. Do not leave the food out in room temperature overnight because your food runs the risk of getting infected with bacteria and other microorganisms. If you must leave the food out, at least cover it with plastic wrap first to protect it from the outer elements. Otherwise, if you consume food that has bacteria, then you’ll likely get sick from it. That will not be a pleasant experience.
